Parque del Manu

You won't believe it but it really exists. Just kidding, maybe many of you were already aware of it. I wasn't. It was a chance discovery, made on my first night in Cusco, looking on Google Maps. I keep telling myself that I should get at least a little more information before I leave, maybe. But then again, the information comes to me somehow. I like to think it's just what needs to come to me. In any case, when I saw the name of this park, I laughed. But then, as I walked around the city, I saw that it is really famous. And it has every reason to be. I decided to make the investment and try to visit it. At least in part. Everything is impossible. It is very big and it is a protected reserve. Think about the fact that within it, not only are there still unstudied species, and here I am talking about both flora and fauna, but even there are unknown tribes. Are we sure about this? Yes, because sightings have been there at the borders of the park. Sightings that have happened from afar. Contact with them is absolutely forbidden. We know almost nothing about these populations. We don't know their customs, how they speak, how and what they live on. Of course, some things can be assumed, but nothing is certain. I don't know about you, but it seems incredible to me.

As written before, you are not allowed to go into this area, but you can explore a little piece of it at least. Mind you, not on your own. Again, you need to organize yourself and go with a guide. The groups are usually quite small. We for example left in 8. And came back in 7. These things happen, after all it is known to be a dangerous environment. It could have been any one of us and it's a good thing it wasn't me. Clearly I am joking! There were really only 7 of us returned, but only because one of us had opted to return early.

In total we stayed four days. They are not that many, however, they are also intense. The feeling when I left was that I wanted to come back and maybe spend more time here. For this time, however, it's okay. The activities have been many and the days long. This is a place full of life and can surprise you at any time. Our lodge was in the middle of the jungle. To get there we had to first navigate the river and then walk. The conditions? In my opinion more than decent. A little water and electricity, we carried food, but the bed was indoors and in a demarcated space. I can say that I slept really well. Not a lot, but good. Not a lot because often the wake-up call was before dawn and the night walk, looking for animals was never lacking. We walked a lot. We often moved by boat despite the strong current and rain. We also swam in the river. Well, to say that we really swam seems exaggerated. We were carried downstream by it. The current is really strong. I am not an excellent swimmer, however, I have a few years of practice behind me. In spite of that, the only thing I managed to do was to decide on the direction a little bit. I was also about to miss the boat. I had to cross only part of the waterway under my own power and it was really tiring. We also didn't miss the zipline in the jungle. Although the most fun part was, at the end, to rappel down 20-meter trees with ropes.

Sometimes it rained all day, sometimes the heat and humidity were almost unbearable. Now it is the rainy season here. It is not the best time to come here. But believe me, though, the experience is really amazing. You see and discover a lot of fascinating things. It is an environment where nature reigns supreme. And it honestly doesn't give a damn about your needs and cravings. As it should. I had the feeling that if you respect her, she knows how to reward you. I saw species of plants and animals that I didn't even know existed. Sometimes it happened that I would walk for hours without finding anything particularly interesting. Then, perhaps standing around the lodge, something wonderful would appear. I was able to hold a small snake collected in the trees. I saw a jaguarundi.

I think I was also de real lucky in terms of the company. The group bonded quickly and we felt good together. The guide was very knowledgeable. But not only that, he was always very humble and friendly. It seems fair to mention the cook as well. She came with us from day one. She was not a local person, so she accompanied us all the way. In addition to cooking very well, she was always very kind and always came to chat with us and be told about our adventures. 

This was another one of those magical places for me. Of course, thanks also to its beautiful name, which by the way is because of the river. It is the river's name. Just to make me discover new things until 'the last moment, just before I left, I learned that the meaning of Manu is slow water or, rather, quiet. It sounded really interesting to me.

Non ci crederete ma esiste davvero. Scherzo, magari molti di voi ne erano già a conoscenza. Io no. È stata una scoperta casuale, fatta la mia prima notte a Cusco, guardando su Google Maps. Continuo a dirmi che dovrei informarmi almeno un poco di più prima di partire, magari. Ma d'altro canto le informazioni arrivano a me in qualche modo. Mi piace pensare che siano proprio quelle che devono arrivare. In ogni caso, quando ho visto il nome di questo parco, mi sono messo a ridere. Poi, però, girando per la città, ho visto che è davvero famoso. E ne ha tutte le ragioni. Ho deciso di fare l'investimento e provare a visitarlo. Almeno in parte. Tutto è impossibile. È molto grande ed è una riserva protetta. Pensate che al suo interno, non solo ci sono specie ancora mai studiate, e qui sto parlando sia di flora che di fauna, ma addirittura ci sono tribù sconosciute. Ne siamo sicuri? Si, perché degli avvistamenti ci sono stati ai confini del parco. Avvistamenti avvenuti da lontano. Il contatto con loro è assolutamente proibito. Di queste popolazioni non sappiamo quasi niente. Non sappiamo i loro usi, costumi, come parlano, come e di cosa vivono. Certo, alcune cose si possono supporre, ma nulla è certo. Non so a voi, ma a me sembra incredibile. 

Come scritto prima, non è permesso addentrarsi in questa zona, ma è possibile esplorarne un pezzetto almeno. Intendiamoci, non per conto tuo. Anche in questo caso serve organizzarsi e andare con una guida. I gruppi solitamente sono abbastanza ristretti. Noi per esempio siamo partiti in 8. E siamo tornati in 7. Sono cose che capitano, d'altronde si sa che è un ambiente pericoloso. Poteva essere chiunque di noi e meno male che non sono stato io. Chiaramente sto scherzando! Siamo tornati veramente solo in 7, ma solo perché uno di noi aveva optato per rientrare prima. 

In totale noi siamo stati 4 giorni. Non sono poi così tanti, però sono anche intensi. La sensazione, quando sono andato via, è stata quella di volerci tornare e magari passare più tempo qui. Per questa volta, però, va bene così. Le attività sono state tante e le giornate lunghe. Questo è un posto pieno di vita e può sorprenderti in ogni momento. Il nostro lodge era nel bel mezzo della giungla. Per arrivarci abbiamo dovuto navigare il fiume prima e camminare poi. Le condizioni? Secondo me più che decenti. Un poco di acqua ed elettricità, il cibo lo abbiamo trasportato, ma il letto era al coperto ed in uno spazio delimitato. Posso dire di aver dormito davvero bene. Non tantissimo, però bene. Non tantissimo perché spesso la sveglia è stata prima dell'alba e la camminata notturna, in cerca di animali non mancava mai. Abbiamo camminato molto. Spesso ci siamo spostati con la barca nonostante la corrente forte e la pioggia. Abbiamo anche nuotato nel fiume. Bè, dire che abbiamo proprio nuotato mi sembra esagerato. Ci siamo fatti trasportare a valle da esso. La corrente è davvero forte. Io non sono un nuotatore eccellente, però ho qualche anno di pratica alle spalle. Nonostante questo, l'unica cosa che sono riuscito a fare è stato decidere un poco la direzione. Stavo anche per mancare la barca. Ho dovuto attraversare solo una parte del corso d'acqua con le mie forze ed è stato davvero faticoso. Non ci siamo fatti sfuggire neanche la zipline nella giungla. Anche se la parte più divertente è stata, alla fine, di calarci giù da alberi di 20 metri con le corde. 

Qualche volta ha piovuto tutto il giorno, qualche volta il calore e l'umidità erano quasi insopportabili. Ora qui è la stagione delle piogge. Non è il miglior periodo per venire qui. Però credetemi, l'esperienza è davvero incredibile. Vedi e scopri un sacco di cose affascinanti. È un ambiente dove la natura regna sovrana. E sinceramente se ne frega dei tuoi bisogni e delle tue voglie. Come è giusto che sia. Io ho avuto la sensazione che se la rispetti, lei sa come ricompensarti. Ho visto specie di piante e animali delle quali non sapevo neanche l'esistenza. A volte capitava di camminare per ore senza trovare niente di particolarmente interessante. Poi, magari stando nei dintorni del lodge, appariva qualcosa di meraviglioso. Ho potuto tenere in mano un piccolo serpente raccolto sugli alberi. Ho visto un jaguarundi. 

 Credo di essere anche stato de vero fortunato per quanto riguarda la compagnia. Il gruppo ha legato velocemente e ci siamo sentiti bene insieme. La guida è stata molto preparata. Ma non solo, lui è sempre stato molto umile ed amichevole. Mi sembra giusto menzionare anche la cuoca. Lei è venuta con noi dal primo giorno. Non era una persona del posto, quindi ci ha accompagnato tutto il tragitto. Oltre a cucinare benissimo, è sempre stata gentilissima e veniva sempre a chiacchierare con noi e a farsi raccontare delle nostre avventure. 

Questo per me è stato un altro di quei posti magici per me. Ovviamente grazie anche al suo bellissimo nome, che tra l'altro è dovuto al fiume. È il fiume che si chiama cosi. Giusto per farmi scoprire cose nuove fino all' ultimo momento, poco prima di andare via, ho appreso che il significato di Manu è acqua lenta o, per meglio dire, tranquilla. A me è sembrato davvero interessante.
