Ucayali

(ENG)

These are my last days in Peru. I am now in Pucallpa, but tomorrow I will take a bus, which will take me to Lima. I have not yet visited the capital and will have 3 days to do so. After that I will leave the country. I have spent the last week in the Ucayali region. It is a region in the Amazon jungle. I came here because I decided to take a few days to stop and make a kind of spiritual retreat. I found a place that was quite isolated and a little bit out of the world. Pucallpa is a small town. Not very big, but still very bustling and lively. I think it is also quite touristy, but it seems that at this time of year there are not so many foreigners hanging around here. Which made me see this place in its essence. I was able to see it in its normal everyday life. And it was interesting. But I was looking for a quiet place and this is not it. So I went to the native community of San Francisco and decided to stay here 5 days to enjoy a little relaxation, rest and connect with nature and myself.

The last period before I got here was peculiar. I did some things I liked a lot and saw some incredible places, but inside I was pretty discombobulated. Some unpleasant things happened that destabilized me, and a lot of questions and doubts started to plague me. These things happen, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I was going through a difficult time. Then experiencing such good things with a very bad inner state only added to the turmoil, and also added to the sorrow of not being able to enjoy 100% what was going on around me. You know when you get into a vicious circle, of which you are perfectly aware, but from which it seems impossible to get out, because every attempt to do so not only seems not to work, but even makes the situation worse? There, I was right there.

I therefore landed at the San Francisco Isla without high hopes and especially without high expectations. I had made arrangements with a local family, and they offered me a small cottage, with a bed and a small space outside. The shower and bathroom were common for everyone, but there was practically never any water, so it was necessary to use a bucket for all the things. Little matter, after all, I was not interested in a luxurious place, but a simple place. Here I also had the opportunity to do the Ayahuasca ceremony. It seemed like a unique opportunity and I took advantage of it. I don't know if everyone knows what it is, but for me it has always been on the bucket list. I won't stop to tell about it, there would be too much to say and then it is also a very personal thing. Having said that, I have nothing to hide, so if anyone has any questions about it, they can easily ask me privately.

Of course, I was not only in my little house reflecting and meditating. I did that as well, but I also went several times to the Ucayali River, from which the whole region gets its name. I also went into the jungle, at least as far as one could go. I visited the "pueblito," which I thought was very interesting. I was also able to visit the neighboring village of Santa Clara and it seemed even more special, smaller and more genuine. In these places many customs and traditions have remained original, but you can also see so much of the influences from the outside world. I think that's also normal. The moment you make places like these accessible to everyone, then it's normal that some things change.

Just by going around among these people, I realized that on this journey there is also something else I am also assiduously searching for: happiness. Yes, I am searching for happiness. Don't get me wrong, not my own. What I am trying to find is a happy place. Where everyone is happy. Or at least most of them. I know that said like that sounds a little childish, as well as utopian, but I am sure that I will find what I am looking for. I will find a place where I can see that deep, pure happiness in people's eyes. I don't want a place where everyone is laughing or smiling all the time, but if you think about it, you can see it clearly when a person is really serene. Here I didn't feel that everyone was like that, however, I can tell you that the children were. I saw genuine joy in them. As well as curiosity. It seemed to me that they lived a simplicity that I have long forgotten. I liked that. I think that's a really beautiful and really important thing.

t has been good for me here. I made a wise choice, in my opinion, to stay here for a while. I had a chance to stop, to look inward, to connect with nature, to observe another world, to understand certain things, to resign myself, to laugh, to admire the starry sky, to catch shooting stars, to see animals that I usually find in documentaries or maybe at the zoo, to get lost in thoughts, to sink into worries, to let go, to trust, to get angry, and to make peace with myself.

Yes, I would say I can go on now.

(ITA)

Paracas

(ENG)

This struck me as one of the most incredible places I have seen so far. The starting point is the small town, which is also pretty. It overlooks the sea and offers tourists from all over the world a chance to relax and eat good seafood. There are several resorts for those who want to stay a little longer, but also many hostels, for those like me who do what they have to do and then move on. Of course there are also very normal hotels for those who choose a middle ground.

I decided to stay here 2 nights. On the day of arrival I just wanted to walk around, relax and take a bath. It's December and it's always an experience to find a place to soak at least a little in the ocean. Okay, the water was not super hot, however, the sun was doing its part and overall I must admit it was pleasant. Having the next day full, I rented a bicycle and went to the Paracas Nature Reserve. And this is where the show began. This place is a small desert peninsula and is protected. You need a ticket to enter it, but not necessarily a tour or guide. You can come there by bike, motorcycle, car or RV if you prefer. Of course, there is also a rich selection of tours of all kinds, which is not bad if they explain a little bit about it. You can also choose a tour that takes you by boat. There are so many options. I, for example, opted for the bike because I had the whole day to myself and because it gave me all the freedom to tour the small peninsula as I liked. I took food and water with me. There are small stores along the way and in one place there are restaurants where you can eat, so you don't really need to load up too much.

The ride I decided to do was dictated a little by the climbs and the wind. I tried not to have the combination of the 2 on the way back because it could have been a little tricky. That way I was able to visit all the major things and return toward the city in a decent and satisfied state. But let's start by saying the things that can be seen. After pedaling for more than an hour in a completely desert environment, I arrive at the first "mirador," a point from which you can see cliffs tens of meters high that plunge into the ocean, but also large white beaches. This already seemed incredible to me. I could have stayed there all day. And be happy and content. But the thirst to explore as much as possible was immense, so I continued. A lot of breathtaking landscapes appeared before me. At one point I found a white beach where there was no one. I decided to jump in. I was so hot and the water was so clear and calm. Everything seemed so perfect. I enjoyed it for an indefinite time and then decided to go on. The next stop? A wonderful gash on the red beach. What to say. Simply spectacular. Unique. It was really red. I stayed for a long time admiring it and told myself that before heading toward town, I would go back and contemplate it, at least for a few minutes. Throughout the rest of the day I encountered a small fishing village, very picturesque coves and other magnificent scenery. I spent the whole time saying, sometimes inwardly, sometimes out loud, that it was all so beautiful. I saw whales, dolphins, penguins and a myriad of birds of all colors.

Finally I really went back to the red beach. I didn't want to leave anymore. By that time, then, there was no one there. It was there all to myself. But at one point, very unwillingly, I had to get on my bike and start pedaling toward the town. But I still managed to enjoy even the strenuous pedaling in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by sand. What can I say, to me it really seemed like a wonderful place that will remain in my eyes and heart for a long time.

(ITA)

Era lì tutta per me.

Ica

(ENG)

I was undecided until the last moment whether to pass through here as well. At first I had decided against it. Many people talked about it as a place to party and have fun. Indeed from that point of view it has a lot to offer. But what is really special about Ica is its desert. The very high sand dunes are visible even from the city. And they are really impressive. And that is precisely why in a short time a small town has become a city of about 500,000 inhabitants.

I personally did not expect it to be so big. As is often the case in these places, as soon as I got off the bus I was mobbed by taxi drivers and vendors of everything. I am used to it by now, and I walk away so that they can offer their services to someone else and I can get my bearings in my own time. I always look for a place as close as I can to spend the night so that I don't have to carry my duffel bag too long and at the same time I don't have to take a cab, which would sometimes cost me as much as the whole night in the hostel.

After unloading my large traveling companion and sorting out a bed for the night, I decided to head for the dunes. I had to go through the whole town, being able to enjoy all the chaos and crowding. At one point I found a shopping center and decided to go in, just to take a break. Both from the noise and the heat. Then I was also curious. I had never yet entered a mall in Peru. At least not one like this, similar to the ones you can find in my neck of the woods. Usually I am not a big fan, however, it served me well and I set off determinedly toward my destination. From there on, even the town seems to quiet down and thin out as we approach the dunes. After an hour or so of walking we arrive at the Huacachina oasis and from there on it was just desert. All happy and content, I covered my head and face and started walking on the sand. In no time I left civilization behind and found myself surrounded by nothingness and silence. How beautiful. For me it was a really good feeling. To make sure that I could not be reached by anyone, I decided to try to climb one of those very high dunes. It is definitely tiring to do it and it takes time, however, for me it was really worth it. I've been up there a lot, I think. I also saw the sunset. It was simply me, the sun, the sand and the air. Nobody else. Nothing else. I meditated, I prayed, I thought, I aimed, but most of the time, I simply was.

I think I have a special relationship with the desert. That's why I decided to experience it this way, but of course there are so many things you can do here. There are so many tours you can do and so many fun organized activities. And then there is also the city, which is full of meeting places, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. I felt to experience it that way, at least as far as the desert is concerned. On the way back in the evening, I found some guys I met at the hostel. We went to eat something together and then continued the evening on the terrace, with a bottle of wine. There were about ten of us, all from different places. One was trying to speak a little Spanish, a little English and at the same time trying to learn at least a few words of a new language.

Ica for me was just one day, very intense, which flew by and was also endless.

(ITA)

Nazca-Nasca

(ENG)

This is another one of those places that I discovered by accident. I had heard about it, actually, but I had no idea that it was located here in Peru. What's more, I always thought it was one of those places that was practically impossible to get to, so not even remotely did I think I could just add it as a stop on this trip. Instead, that's exactly what happened.

Having finished everything I had to do and see around Cusco, a decision had to be made: go further south and then rush at the last moment toward Lima, or start heading north, thus bringing me closer toward my destination. I opted for the latter. The reasons are mainly 2: the first is that I only had 2 goals heading south, and the second is that it also seems easier to do it this way. I am sorry to skip Arequipa, I am sure it is beautiful. There are many who go there and I really think it is worth it. But let me put it this way, if I leave something undone, at least I have a reason to come back here. As for Lake Titicaca, however, I haven't given up the idea of visiting it. Only I want to do it from the other side. I mean from Bolivia, which was on my list anyway.

So here is the first stop in the ascent of Peru is Nasca. With only a 16-hour bus ride from Cusco, you arrive in this town, which actually, if I am really honest, has nothing special to offer. It is a very dry place and seems almost inhospitable. It is very hot and it never rains. So what's special about it? Aliens have been through there. And maybe they still pass through from time to time, who knows. The locals seem too busy to realize it, and the tourists who come here usually spend just a few hours and then move on. All very busy, in short. Probably if extraterrestrials walked by them, they wouldn't realize it.

Okay, okay, I exaggerated a little bit. Now let's talk seriously. Here you can take a plane and take a ride over the area. By doing so you will be able to see the famous Nasca lines. You will see giant shapes drawn on the ground. There are so many explanations for this. All plausible and all refutable. Probably some of you have an absolute truth about it and I am ready to hear it. For now I like that there remains in it a little unsolved mystery.

I did the tour by plane. I didn't book anything before I got here. There is actually no shortage of opportunities. There is also to be said that this is low season, so it is easier to find a seat. What's more, it can also happen that you are just one person short of filling the plane, at which point the discount is triggered. And that's what happened to me. So I got on the small plane with five total strangers to make my 40-minute flight. The aircraft was smaller and unsafe than the one I used in my skydiving days, but then again, it adds an extra thrill to the experience. Yes because being up there and looking at the drawings on the ground was really exciting. It was for me, I had a starry feeling. A mixture of curiosity and reverence, Moreover, it seems incredible to me that they were there for so long.

I spent 2 days here, which allowed me to see it from above and also to physically go there to see what it is all about. They are actually simply plotted on the ground. Doesn't that sound amazing? I also took time to stand there and see what it felt like. There is a strange energy, At least I felt it that way. I'm not going to categorize it as good or bad, I don't feel like that. I can tell you, though, that it is very peculiar. I was also lucky, because usually people don't do this. Tourists are in a hurry and the locals have other things to do, so I had these places all to myself and got to savor the whole essence of it. I also had the opportunity to see the city as it is, in its everydayness. Seeing such a unique and un-touristy place is always interesting. Of course it has its pros and cons, however, it is definitely worth discovering all sides of it.

(ITA)
