Ucayali

(ENG)

These are my last days in Peru. I am now in Pucallpa, but tomorrow I will take a bus, which will take me to Lima. I have not yet visited the capital and will have 3 days to do so. After that I will leave the country. I have spent the last week in the Ucayali region. It is a region in the Amazon jungle. I came here because I decided to take a few days to stop and make a kind of spiritual retreat. I found a place that was quite isolated and a little bit out of the world. Pucallpa is a small town. Not very big, but still very bustling and lively. I think it is also quite touristy, but it seems that at this time of year there are not so many foreigners hanging around here. Which made me see this place in its essence. I was able to see it in its normal everyday life. And it was interesting. But I was looking for a quiet place and this is not it. So I went to the native community of San Francisco and decided to stay here 5 days to enjoy a little relaxation, rest and connect with nature and myself.

The last period before I got here was peculiar. I did some things I liked a lot and saw some incredible places, but inside I was pretty discombobulated. Some unpleasant things happened that destabilized me, and a lot of questions and doubts started to plague me. These things happen, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I was going through a difficult time. Then experiencing such good things with a very bad inner state only added to the turmoil, and also added to the sorrow of not being able to enjoy 100% what was going on around me. You know when you get into a vicious circle, of which you are perfectly aware, but from which it seems impossible to get out, because every attempt to do so not only seems not to work, but even makes the situation worse? There, I was right there.

I therefore landed at the San Francisco Isla without high hopes and especially without high expectations. I had made arrangements with a local family, and they offered me a small cottage, with a bed and a small space outside. The shower and bathroom were common for everyone, but there was practically never any water, so it was necessary to use a bucket for all the things. Little matter, after all, I was not interested in a luxurious place, but a simple place. Here I also had the opportunity to do the Ayahuasca ceremony. It seemed like a unique opportunity and I took advantage of it. I don't know if everyone knows what it is, but for me it has always been on the bucket list. I won't stop to tell about it, there would be too much to say and then it is also a very personal thing. Having said that, I have nothing to hide, so if anyone has any questions about it, they can easily ask me privately.

Of course, I was not only in my little house reflecting and meditating. I did that as well, but I also went several times to the Ucayali River, from which the whole region gets its name. I also went into the jungle, at least as far as one could go. I visited the "pueblito," which I thought was very interesting. I was also able to visit the neighboring village of Santa Clara and it seemed even more special, smaller and more genuine. In these places many customs and traditions have remained original, but you can also see so much of the influences from the outside world. I think that's also normal. The moment you make places like these accessible to everyone, then it's normal that some things change.

Just by going around among these people, I realized that on this journey there is also something else I am also assiduously searching for: happiness. Yes, I am searching for happiness. Don't get me wrong, not my own. What I am trying to find is a happy place. Where everyone is happy. Or at least most of them. I know that said like that sounds a little childish, as well as utopian, but I am sure that I will find what I am looking for. I will find a place where I can see that deep, pure happiness in people's eyes. I don't want a place where everyone is laughing or smiling all the time, but if you think about it, you can see it clearly when a person is really serene. Here I didn't feel that everyone was like that, however, I can tell you that the children were. I saw genuine joy in them. As well as curiosity. It seemed to me that they lived a simplicity that I have long forgotten. I liked that. I think that's a really beautiful and really important thing.

t has been good for me here. I made a wise choice, in my opinion, to stay here for a while. I had a chance to stop, to look inward, to connect with nature, to observe another world, to understand certain things, to resign myself, to laugh, to admire the starry sky, to catch shooting stars, to see animals that I usually find in documentaries or maybe at the zoo, to get lost in thoughts, to sink into worries, to let go, to trust, to get angry, and to make peace with myself.

Yes, I would say I can go on now.

Ica

(ENG)

I was undecided until the last moment whether to pass through here as well. At first I had decided against it. Many people talked about it as a place to party and have fun. Indeed from that point of view it has a lot to offer. But what is really special about Ica is its desert. The very high sand dunes are visible even from the city. And they are really impressive. And that is precisely why in a short time a small town has become a city of about 500,000 inhabitants.

I personally did not expect it to be so big. As is often the case in these places, as soon as I got off the bus I was mobbed by taxi drivers and vendors of everything. I am used to it by now, and I walk away so that they can offer their services to someone else and I can get my bearings in my own time. I always look for a place as close as I can to spend the night so that I don't have to carry my duffel bag too long and at the same time I don't have to take a cab, which would sometimes cost me as much as the whole night in the hostel.

After unloading my large traveling companion and sorting out a bed for the night, I decided to head for the dunes. I had to go through the whole town, being able to enjoy all the chaos and crowding. At one point I found a shopping center and decided to go in, just to take a break. Both from the noise and the heat. Then I was also curious. I had never yet entered a mall in Peru. At least not one like this, similar to the ones you can find in my neck of the woods. Usually I am not a big fan, however, it served me well and I set off determinedly toward my destination. From there on, even the town seems to quiet down and thin out as we approach the dunes. After an hour or so of walking we arrive at the Huacachina oasis and from there on it was just desert. All happy and content, I covered my head and face and started walking on the sand. In no time I left civilization behind and found myself surrounded by nothingness and silence. How beautiful. For me it was a really good feeling. To make sure that I could not be reached by anyone, I decided to try to climb one of those very high dunes. It is definitely tiring to do it and it takes time, however, for me it was really worth it. I've been up there a lot, I think. I also saw the sunset. It was simply me, the sun, the sand and the air. Nobody else. Nothing else. I meditated, I prayed, I thought, I aimed, but most of the time, I simply was.

I think I have a special relationship with the desert. That's why I decided to experience it this way, but of course there are so many things you can do here. There are so many tours you can do and so many fun organized activities. And then there is also the city, which is full of meeting places, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. I felt to experience it that way, at least as far as the desert is concerned. On the way back in the evening, I found some guys I met at the hostel. We went to eat something together and then continued the evening on the terrace, with a bottle of wine. There were about ten of us, all from different places. One was trying to speak a little Spanish, a little English and at the same time trying to learn at least a few words of a new language.

Ica for me was just one day, very intense, which flew by and was also endless.

End of another experience

(ENG)

In this last period many things are changing. My plans and itineraries are transforming very quickly. Sometimes I get a little stressed by this. I realize it requires a lot of energy and I feel it consumes me. It is nothing serious and certainly many people feel this every day in their daily lives. There are many factors here that can determine your tomorrow and sometimes these factors have nothing to do with you. Actually, because it is my point of view, they are very much connected with me. What I mean is that I am not in control of them. I also happened to try to direct and do it the way I wanted to do it, but most of the time it didn't really go very well. My initial plan for these months is constantly changing, and as I try to adapt and cope with new situations, I also always have to think about tomorrow. At least roughly, because some things have to be done on time. For example, I know that in South America, I can travel without a visa, but at the same time I always have to also have something to show that I will get out of the respective state within the time frame. So I can't say I'm going to Peru 2 months and then we'll see. Before I get there I have to decide the next destination and the exact date of when I will go there. The departure from this country is slowly approaching and I had to start thinking about the next steps. It is not easy and, if you are not careful, you risk losing time and money.

That's pretty much how this last week went for me. I volunteered in a 'Hacienda'. Think my initial plan was to stay here a month. Then it turned into 2 weeks. Finally it was reduced to one week. But that's basically okay. So many times expectations are really different from what it really is. I didn't have a bad time here. It was very interesting and I also met a lot of people. Most of them volunteers like me. People from a little bit from all over the world, although it must be said that Europeans were the vast majority. With some I had conversations and a deeper connection, with others less. But that's perfectly fine, I also have to say that if I ended up staying only a week here, it's because of one person I met. Don't jump to conclusions, just that we realized we both wanted to do something and made arrangements to have this experience together. Let's take a little piece of the journey together and then go our separate ways.

I have also been thinking a lot about the various encounters these days. Since I left home, I have had very many. Some have lasted longer, some have lasted less. What I wonder is how many of these people I will ever see again in my lifetime. Some times it was hard to say goodbye, even though maybe we had only spent a few hours together. I guess that's part of the game. It occurs to me that it is actually always like that in life. It's just that going on a trip like that, everything seems to be accelerated. And all very intense.

So it has been this week as well. There were moments when I wished it would go by faster and others when I felt like time was flying by and that maybe it would be better to stop longer. I learned many things, however, I was also able to rest and relax. On my walks up the mountains I met local people, with whom I had interesting conversations that led me to learn something new about local life. Which for me is always most interesting. One day, for example, I went up a valley that was visible from the 'Hacienda,' but which none of us had explored. I set out determinedly, to see if there was anything interesting. I walked for a long time and the valley seemed really endless. After encountering a small village, I decided to stop and simply enjoy the scenery for a while before descending again. Then again, it was really worth it. When I felt that I had gotten what I needed from that place, I set off on my way back. Soon after, a gentleman came by and asked me if I was going down. I told him yes. Then he said "vamos" and started walking by my side and talking to me. Then suddenly a pickup truck drove by. He was going down as well. My downhill companion stopped him and got into the trailer. He told me to hurry up, to get in quickly. At that point I went up. We continued the conversation standing, holding each other somehow, with the car running down the dirt road. Then I also managed to get down where I needed to, which seemed to me to be a great success. Whereas here it seems that all this is a very normal thing.

I also learned more about the attitude of the animals. In this 'Hacienda' there were as many as 16 dogs. I noticed that when they all live together like this, it is very easy for them to herd. Most of the time they would all stand among us and cuddle, but at certain times, especially at night, if one started barking at someone and tried to bite them, all the others would follow. Or at least almost all of them. In fact, some of them seemed to be out of the chorus and with a relaxed, but at the same time assertive attitude, they would decide for themselves what to do. I thought that was very interesting. In my opinion it reflects a little bit what happens in societies usually. But this is just my personal opinion.

It was a fairly short but intense experience. If I pause to ask myself if I am glad it is over, the answer would be yes. However, I can also say with certainty that I would do it again. With all the worries about the pack, with all the little and cold water in the shower, with all the difficulties in learning almost every day new names and new stories, trying not to get them mixed up, and of course, with all the smiles and laughter, with all the songs sung together, with all the amazing and funny stories shared, with all the nature, with all the moments of relaxation and meditation, I would also definitely do it again.

(ITA)

La maggior parte volontari come me.

Poi all'improvviso è passato un pickup.
