Nazca-Nasca

This is another one of those places that I discovered by accident. I had heard about it, actually, but I had no idea that it was located here in Peru. What's more, I always thought it was one of those places that was practically impossible to get to, so not even remotely did I think I could just add it as a stop on this trip. Instead, that's exactly what happened.

Having finished everything I had to do and see around Cusco, a decision had to be made: go further south and then rush at the last moment toward Lima, or start heading north, thus bringing me closer toward my destination. I opted for the latter. The reasons are mainly 2: the first is that I only had 2 goals heading south, and the second is that it also seems easier to do it this way. I am sorry to skip Arequipa, I am sure it is beautiful. There are many who go there and I really think it is worth it. But let me put it this way, if I leave something undone, at least I have a reason to come back here. As for Lake Titicaca, however, I haven't given up the idea of visiting it. Only I want to do it from the other side. I mean from Bolivia, which was on my list anyway.

So here is the first stop in the ascent of Peru is Nasca. With only a 16-hour bus ride from Cusco, you arrive in this town, which actually, if I am really honest, has nothing special to offer. It is a very dry place and seems almost inhospitable. It is very hot and it never rains. So what's special about it? Aliens have been through there. And maybe they still pass through from time to time, who knows. The locals seem too busy to realize it, and the tourists who come here usually spend just a few hours and then move on. All very busy, in short. Probably if extraterrestrials walked by them, they wouldn't realize it. 

Okay, okay, I exaggerated a little bit. Now let's talk seriously. Here you can take a plane and take a ride over the area. By doing so you will be able to see the famous Nasca lines. You will see giant shapes drawn on the ground. There are so many explanations for this. All plausible and all refutable. Probably some of you have an absolute truth about it and I am ready to hear it. For now I like that there remains in it a little unsolved mystery.

I did the tour by plane. I didn't book anything before I got here. There is actually no shortage of opportunities. There is also to be said that this is low season, so it is easier to find a seat. What's more, it can also happen that you are just one person short of filling the plane, at which point the discount is triggered. And that's what happened to me. So I got on the small plane with five total strangers to make my 40-minute flight. The aircraft was smaller and unsafe than the one I used in my skydiving days, but then again, it adds an extra thrill to the experience. Yes because being up there and looking at the drawings on the ground was really exciting. It was for me, I had a starry feeling. A mixture of curiosity and reverence, Moreover, it seems incredible to me that they were there for so long.

I spent 2 days here, which allowed me to see it from above and also to physically go there to see what it is all about. They are actually simply plotted on the ground. Doesn't that sound amazing? I also took time to stand there and see what it felt like. There is a strange energy, At least I felt it that way. I'm not going to categorize it as good or bad, I don't feel like that. I can tell you, though, that it is very peculiar. I was also lucky, because usually people don't do this. Tourists are in a hurry and the locals have other things to do, so I had these places all to myself and got to savor the whole essence of it. I also had the opportunity to see the city as it is, in its everydayness. Seeing such a unique and un-touristy place is always interesting. Of course it has its pros and cons, however, it is definitely worth discovering all sides of it.

Questo è un'altro di quei luoghi che ho scoperto per caso. Ne avevo sentito parlare, a dire il vero, ma non avevo idea che si trovasse qui, in Perù. Oltretutto ho sempre creduto che fosse uno di quei posti praticamente impossibili da raggiungere, quindi neanche lontanamente ho pensato che avrei potuto semplicemente aggiungerlo come tappa in questo viaggio. Invece è proprio andata così.

Finito tutto quello che avevo da fare e vedere nei dintorni di Cusco, era necessario prendere una decisione: andare ancora più a sud e poi correre all'ultimo momento verso Lima, oppure iniziare ad andare verso nord, avvicinandomi così verso la meta. Ho optato per la seconda. I motivi sono principalmente 2: il primo è che avevo solo 2 obbiettivi verso sud e il secondo è che mi sembra anche più facile fare così. Mi spiace saltare Arequipa, sono sicuro che è bellissima. Sono in molti ad andarci e credo davvero che ne valga la pena. Ma mettiamola così, se lascio qualcosa in sospeso, almeno ho un motivo per tornare qui. Per quanto riguarda il lago Titicaca, invece, non ho abbandonato l'idea di visitarlo. Solo che voglio farlo dall'altro lato. Intendo dalla Bolivia, che comunque era sulla mia lista.

Ecco quindi che la prima tappa nella risalita del Perù è Nasca. Con sole 16 ore di pullman da Cusco, si arriva in questa città, che in realtà, se devo essere proprio sincero, non ha niente di speciale da offrire. E' un luogo molto arido e sembra quasi inospitale. Fa' molto caldo e non piove mai. Quindi cosa ha di speciale? Ci sono passati gli alieni. E magari ci passano ancora ogni tanto, chissà. La gente del posto sembra troppo indaffarata per rendersene conto e i turisti che arrivano qui, solitamente passano giusto qualche ora e poi vanno oltre. Tutti impegnatissimi, insomma. Probabilmente se gli extraterrestri camminassero accanto a loro, non se ne renderebbero conto. 

Ok, ok, ho esagerato un poco. Ora parliamo seriamente. Qui puoi prendere un aereo e farti un giro sopra la zona. Così facendo potrai vedere le famose linee di Nasca. Vedrai delle forme gigantesche disegnate sul suolo. Le spiegazioni a riguardo sono davvero tante. Tutte plausibili e tutte confutabili. Probabilmente qualcuno di voi ha una verità assoluta a riguarda e sono pronto a sentirla. Per ora mi piace che rimanga in essa un poco di mistero irrisolto. 

Io ho fatto il giro in aereo. Non ho prenotato niente prima di giungere qui. In realtà le opportunità non mancano. C'è anche da dire che questa è bassa stagione, quindi è più facile trovare posto. Oltretutto può anche capitarvi che manchi giusto una persona per riempire l'aereo e a quel punto scatta lo sconto. Ed è quello che è capitato a me. Sono così salito sul piccolo aereo con 5 perfetti sconosciuti per fare il mio volo di 40 minuti. Il velivolo era più piccolo e insicuro di quello che utilizzavo ai tempi del paracadutismo, ma d'altronde aggiunge un emozione in più all'esperienza. Sì perché stare lassù e guardare i disegni al suolo è stato davvero emozionante. Lo è stato per me, Ho provato una starna sensazione. Un misto di curiosità e di riverenza, Oltretutto mi sembra incredibile che siano rimaste lì per così tanto tempo.

Ho passato qui 2 giorni, il ché mi  ha permesso di vederlo dall'alto e anche di andarci fisicamente per vedere di cosa si tratta. In realtà sono semplicemente tracciate per terra. Non vi sembra incredibile? Mi sono anche preso del tempo per stare lì e vedere cosa si sentiva. C'è una strana energia, Almeno io l'ho percepita così. Non starò a categorizzarla come buona o cattiva, non mi sembra il caso. Però posso dirvi che è molto particolare. Sono stato anche fortunato, perché solitamente le persone non fanno questa cosa. I turisti sono di fretta e la gente del posto ha altro da fare, quindi ho avuto questi luoghi tutti per me e ne ho potuto assaporare tutta l'essenza. Ho avuto anche l'occasione di vedere la città così com'è, nella sua quotidianità. Vedere un posto così particolare e poco turistico è sempre interessante. Ovviamente ha i suoi pro e i suoi contro, però sicuramente vale la pena di scoprire tutti i suoi lati.
